One of the major and most prolific sf pro artists during the 1950s and ’60s, Ed Emshwiller was particularly known for his covers for Galaxy, F&SF, and Ace Books. He signed his work as "Emsh." During the ’70s and ’80s, he turned more towards film.

He was married to Carol Emshwiller Luis Ortiz has written and published a biography of Emshwiller, Infinity X Two.
