One of the major and most prolific pro sf artists during the 1950s and ’60s, Ed Emshwiller was particularly known for his covers for Galaxy, F&SF, and Ace Books. He signed his work as "Emsh." During the ’70s and ’80s, he turned more towards film.

He was married to Carol Emshwiller. Luis Ortiz wrote a biography, Emshwiller: Infinity x Two: The Life & Art of Ed & Carol Emshwiller, published in 2007 by NonStop Press; it was a 2008 Best Related Book Hugo finalist.
