An artist born in New Zealand and a founder (along with Frank Dodd) of the Auckland Science Fiction Club in 1952. In 1958 Hinge moved to the United States, initially to LA, and his work appeared in numerous fanzines as well as on the cover of Amazing Stories.

He was nominated for the 1973 Best Professional Artist Hugo. In 1984, he was an impromptu GoH at the New Zealand Natcon.

While still in New Zealand, he published Fanzine Time with Monica Naughton.
