Nils was born in [[Sweden]]. He was given to a foster family when his mother died and emigrated with another adoptive family to Canada in 1924. He lived outside [[Vancouver]] and worked as a cook in a lumber camp. After high school, he attended Vocational Art School in Vancouver. Success as a commercial artist eluded him.  Ultimately, he returned to Sweden and finally moved to [[Wales]], where he died in destitution.

Nils Frome, an early Canadian fan, edited SupraMundane Stories, the first Canadian genzine, and possibly the country’s first fanzine, in the late 1930s . An artist, he contributed illos to many American fanzines (sometimes under his own name and sometimes under the penname Herkanos), via Sam Moskowitz, who acted as his U.S. agent.

He was a correspondent of H. P. Lovecraft’s. The letters were published in Phantastique/Science Fiction Critic (March 1938) and HPL’s Uncollected Letters (Necronomicon Press, 1986). Sam Moskowitz wrote Howard Phillips Lovecraft and Nils Helmer Frome (Moshassuck Press, 1989). World War II fafiated Frome.
