Security is a convention department responsible for controlling access to parts of the convention. This might be preventing members of the public or free-loading fans from general entry, controlling ticketed or invite-only items, or controlling out-of-hours access to the hucksters' room and art show.

Historically, Security teams have tended to expand their remit, and once they start investigating pick-pocketing or pilfering, there is a slippery slope into officiousness. Sometimes this results in security morphing to run the convention, sometimes it's "only" individuals abusing their power.

It's common knowledge among experienced con-runners that “People who want to work security should not be allowed to.”

In early Worldcons, the head of security was sometimes called the sergeant-at-arms.
