Megalon

The Brazilian fanzine Megalon – Ficção Científica & Horror was published between 1988 and 2004, with 71 regular editions - in 2017 a 72th one came out. Arthur C. Clarke's centenary special. Its editorial line was to support the dissemination and development of Brazilian FC&F, having opened space for writers and fans. Its pages contained national and international news, publications received, interviews, articles, illustrations, short stories and book and film reviews. Occasionally, he also published comic stories.

Megalon is inserted in the context of the so-called Second Wave of Brazilian Science Fiction (1982-2004), which meant the revival of the genre in the country, after the difficult years of the military dictatorship, which interrupted the First Wave (1958-1972). While this first wave was formed mainly by writers around two publishers that regularly published Brazilian authors, the second wave saw the emergence of a new generation of fans and authors, who without the same space in traditional publishers, published mainly in fanzines that, over the years, became more and more sophisticated. In addition to Megalon, other important fanzines were from that time: Boletim Antares, Hiperespaço, Papêra Uirandê and Somnium - the latter published by the Science Fiction Readers Club (CLFC). Megalon is the most awarded Brazilian fanzine, with 10 awards, including 7 Nova Awards (Brazil) (between 1989 and 1996) and 3 Argos Awards (between 2000 and 2002). International names such as Orson Scott Card, Bruce Sterling, Jeff VanderMeer and Jean-Claude Dunyach have collaborated in their editions, in addition to important national authors, such as André Carneiro, Jorge Luiz Calife, Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro and Roberto de Sousa Causo.
